DRIVING LICENSE

In Albania you can drive with a validate international driving license if it has not expired or that there are no limitations that prevent its use.

ROADS CONDITIONS

The affirmation that the roads in Albania are disastrous is a statement very common until some years ago. In fact in the last two years traffic situation improved a lot.
Many bad roads have been repaved and new ones have been built.
The highway network is also constantly expanding and there are currently no paid sections within the nationwide. Only the highway that conduces you to Kosovo must be paid at Kukes toll.
Only minor roads, mountain roads or those leading to inland villages that are excluded from the usual tourist itineraries remain unsettled.

TRAFFIC

Traffic, especially during the summer, remains a big problem, even though the improvements in the lasts years.
Road network is not sufficient at the moment to cope with the large vehicle’s influx in summer months. In this period of time travelling takes much longer than it could be.
Seaside towns like Saranda and Vlora are literally impossible in August also because there are no alternative roads that allows you to avoid the city center.
Although at other times of the year the traffic situation is more acceptable, in cities like Tirana, Fier and Vlora the traffic is always intense.

ALBANIAN DRIVING STYLE

Is very common to hear about Albanians are very dangerous to drive!
Note to pay attention while driving in Albania, drivers are very cahotic especially when you are new in town. Even though you will get alone with them.
Drivers hunking loud the horn first and for the longest.
While driving in the crowd is not unusual to see pedestrians crossing wildly even if they have a red traffic light.
Along the roads often you will see many cars moving slowly which creates difficultness to over take because the roads are small and curvely. Other times you will see people over taking in a full speed.
Wheter or not the strangest thing is that I’ve never seen an accident!
The level of accuracy has been taking for a great attention in these roads. Fearless!!
Somebody told me that this is just because many few of them didn’t attend the driving classes…!
